Focus and Scope

Deskomvis: Jurnal Ilmiah Desain Komunikasi Visual, Seni Rupa dan Media publishes original scholarly research that advances knowledge, critical inquiry, and research-based practice in Visual Communication Design, Visual Arts, Digital Art, Visual Culture, and Media.

The journal welcomes interdisciplinary research where the research problem, object of study, methodological approach, and scholarly contribution remain clearly connected to the journal's focus and scope.

Research Approaches

Deskomvis does not restrict research to a single methodological tradition. The journal welcomes qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, experimental, design-based, practice-based, user-research, visual, semiotic, historical, ethnographic, computational, corpus-based, and other academically defensible research approaches, provided that the selected method is appropriate to the research objective and is explained with sufficient clarity, rigor, and transparency.

Regardless of the methodological approach, manuscripts must demonstrate a clearly defined research problem, an appropriate research method or analytical framework, identifiable findings or outcomes, critical analysis, and an original scholarly contribution.

Manuscript Type and Editorial Priority

Original Research Articles

Deskomvis primarily publishes Original Research Articles. An Original Research Article must present an original investigation and provide identifiable new findings, analyses, interpretations, knowledge, design outcomes, or scholarly contributions.

Original Research Articles may include:

  1. Empirical Research — research based on systematically collected and analysed data using qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, experimental, observational, ethnographic, user-research, or other appropriate empirical research designs.
  2. Design Research / Practice-Based Research — research in which design processes, artefacts, prototypes, interventions, creative practices, or visual practices form part of an explicit research framework and produce identifiable original findings, knowledge, methodological insights, or other scholarly contributions. A presentation or documentation of a design project alone does not constitute research.
  3. Case-, Corpus-, Artefact-, or Phenomenon-Based Research — research that systematically investigates a clearly defined case, visual corpus, artefact, media object, design work, practice, representation, or phenomenon through an explicit methodological and theoretical or analytical framework and produces an identifiable original analytical contribution.

All three forms above are classified by Deskomvis as Original Research Articles when they fulfil the journal's requirements for originality, methodological clarity, analytical depth, and scholarly contribution.

Deskomvis prioritizes original research and maintains a publication composition in which at least 60% of the scholarly articles in each regular issue are Original Research Articles.

Literature Review Policy

Deskomvis does not accept stand-alone literature review manuscripts as a publication type.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR);
  • scoping reviews;
  • bibliometric reviews;
  • narrative literature reviews;
  • integrative literature reviews;
  • meta-review or review-of-reviews manuscripts; and
  • other manuscripts whose primary contribution consists of summarising, synthesising, classifying, mapping, or reviewing previously published literature.

A rigorous review of previous research remains an essential component of every Original Research Article and should be used to establish the state of the art, identify the research gap, position the study in relation to previous scholarship, and justify the originality, novelty, and scholarly contribution of the research.

Out of Scope

  • manuscripts whose primary subject falls outside the journal's stated scope and does not establish a substantive scholarly connection to visual communication, visual arts, visual culture, or media;
  • stand-alone literature review manuscripts, including SLR, scoping reviews, bibliometric reviews, narrative reviews, and similar review-based articles;
  • purely descriptive reports without a clearly defined research problem, research method or analytical framework, critical analysis, and identifiable scholarly contribution;
  • portfolio presentations, showcases, promotional materials, commercial project reports, or design documentation without an explicit research framework and original scholarly findings;
  • opinion essays, reflective essays, or general theoretical discussions that are not supported by a clearly defined research object, method or analytical procedure, and academically defensible evidence;
  • manuscripts that substantially duplicate previously published work or are simultaneously submitted elsewhere; and
  • manuscripts that violate the journal's research-integrity, authorship, publication-ethics, or academic-misconduct policies.
